Here are my priorities for 2011 @ diyra.org

Make sure the contact form and email boxes get quality-checked for full functionality.
- Apologies to anyone who tried and failed to contact me or anybody else at diyra.

Exploit groups for discussions and interclub communications.

Priorities?

I'm thinking there are maybe just three things DIYRA needs to do for its membership this year. Of course the $64,000 question is "Just what ARE those three things, Paul?"...

For me, #1 is Help with interclub communication, specifically regatta calendar publication, and building a website that helps with that, but also building tools (like discussion group "forums") to also help.

exec comm mtg - topic: what are we really wanting to accomplish with the site and what would be the 3 next things

My small piece of the world today sort of looks like this...

Admin stuff:
site maint - get exec comm added in, restructure news/announcement pages (blogs) if called for
email and doc accounts - complete configuration for individuals
ggroup - work w diyra-announcements to sort it out, how to use, invite member club reps (when the dev task build contacts list is done)

Dev stuff:
contact list - so we can build a Google Groups invite for diyra-announcements group. can we use this as a "mailing list"?
calendar items - publish guidance on what to send me for auto-import/bulk load of club events (maint would be separate)
calendar organization - decide if it's all one or several (and if several, what ARE they?)
news - publish guidance on subscribing to announcement pages (and/or site changes?)
map hack - link local wx to club listing, we can do not just driving directions to a venue but also weather there
new page - "wx" gadgets and links to use for local sites weather / short-list of standard resources

So how to prioritize...

What's really next?

posted Feb 25, 2010 7:32 PM by Paul Leonard   [ updated Feb 25, 2010 7:38 PM ]

What's *really* next is to get more info from member clubs so we can proceed with making this all a better communication conduit. Biggest impediment I see right now - no good contacts list. Many of our member clubs do not even list physical location information in a "Contact Us" page, much less use role-based email addresses or have a listing of positions and contact info for 2nd-generation reach-outs....

Right now I'm thinking thats get a Club contact list started. Gotta start inviting people to the party. Treasurer's the logical builder to start, I think.... o Rusty....

Map built

Well, I've got thru all the Clubs (whew!). The gMap Page is actually built.

Not all markers are as good as the others, see "Mapped?" on the Member Clubs page.

Everybody except Pickwick has a marker. As for Pickwick, I just can't find them in the world. If somebody from the club would like to contact me, great. I feel bad - they pay dues!

I'll work on adding more value to the map, maybe a link to the club list page... suggestions welcome.

Map building comments

So, here I am working on building a gMap for all the member clubs. It will fit in with the whole Google Apps idea that's driving much of the new dirya.org, and (lets be honest) it's REAL handy. As I'm working through the list if member clubs, I am seeing a really annoying thing...

There are several clubs so far without addresses that are "searchable" in Google. And I'm pretty freaking good at that.

I see lots of really good creative writing that is actually follow-able (is that a word?) to getcha through the piney woods to the secret sailing clubhouse, but, come on folks - how about a street address? If your community is so far out of the mainstream that snailmail cannot be delivered to the facility, fine, but otherwise could we all at least try to list that address SOMEWHERE on the website?

After all, every single organization here is technologically advanced enough to HAVE a website, how hard is the stretch to publish an actual dirt address?

Service providers changing

I'm swinging us from iPower for domain reg and DNS to DynDNS - might cause a few availability bumps. None really expected, but youse never know...

Whats up for week of 2/22/09

Back from Tampa - J/24 Midwinters was AWESOME - big wind start and finishing (slack in the middle)... 33 boats on the water practically a 5-way tie for first after 2 days racing, really too much. See this site for the finals and such...

But, I digress....

What's up for this week? Working on building DIYRA users and continuing setup of whole Google Apps business as a DIYRA group resource, defining calendar / event posting practices, building a mailing list function via Google Groups, general document management techniques, enabling other DIYRA folks to do updates, enabling RSS feeds for site changes yadda yadda yadda....

Test data comments

So, I'm testing out how best to arrange regatta announcements and such. During that activity, I'll be using various LLSC events, because, well, I'm also webmaster for that club, and I already have the data for their calendar and past events as a result. Please don't take that as some sort of slight or inappropriate bias. Soon as I can get good patterns of use worked out, there'll be trumpets & everything, and I'll be beating the bushes to get content from everybody.

New website is "Live"

As of Jan 28, I've turned up the new site. It's still very much a work-in progress, but now it's fully visible as www.diyra.org. Comments are welcome, via email only for now. I'll have article commenting and change subscription etc worked out as soon as I can.
